Army National Guard Officer Second Lieutenant (2LT) Jobs - Learn What Junior Officers Do

by Charles Holmes

Most new Army National Guard Second Lieutenants serve as Platoon Leaders. In this capacity, they manage 20-50 Soldiers and NCOs. Their primary responsibility is to conduct mission planning. They also establish priorities, handle discipline issues, administration issues, and oversee the operational readiness of their platoon.

Next, Second Lieutenants can also serve as an Aide-de-Camp for a General Officer. In this position, they work with a Brigadier General or Major General as their assistant. They process paperwork, schedule events, coordinate with outside agencies, run errands, and perform routine tasks to help simplify their General's day-to-day activities.

2LTs can also serve as Instructors. In many OCS units, a new 2LT will also serve as an Instructor or TAC Officer. They work closely with the senior staff and Officer Candidates. They teach, coach, mentor and train the OCS Candidates and perform tasks to assists the cadre.

In some units, new Lieutenants serve as Staff Officers. Depending on their Basic Branch and available positions within the unit, a 2LT could serve as an Assistant Battalion S3 Officer, S6 Officer, or Assistant S1/S4 Officer.

The key point to remember is that a Second Lieutenant position is an entry-level management position. In this capacity, Second Lieutenants are expected to take responsibility and act like a leader, even though they don't have the experience or maturity yet. It's one of the reasons new Army Second Lieutenants "grow up fast."

Most new Army Officers are given much more responsibility than their civilian counterparts. Where else can a 22-25 year old recent college graduate get a supervisory job with that much responsibility?
